Tech Tools, Reviewed

In today's digital age, technology has the power to enhance the lives of seniors by keeping them connected, entertained, and informed. However, navigating the complex world of modern gadgets and apps can often feel overwhelming, leading to frustration and stress. Fortunately, there are a plethora of user-friendly tech tools specifically designed with seniors in mind, making it easier than ever to embrace technology with confidence and ease. Now, I don't always recommend using these specialty devices, for many of them are not compatible with the smartphones other family members use, and can cause more problems than they solve. That being said, if you have a loved one who is missing out on family photos, FaceTimes, and texting, these devices may help.

In this blog post, we'll investigate a variety of tech gadgets tailored for seniors and offer product reviews and recommendations based on their ease of use and accessibility features.

User-Friendly Tech Gadgets:

I still stand by the iPad as one of the user-friendliest devices there is. With a little tweaking of the preferences and set up of basic apps, it can be made even more accessible. I think the Apple iPad is one of the most engaging tech tools there is today. Blame my father for my Apple obsession and my mom for my voracious reading habit.

Why iPad: Are you a senior looking to dive into the world of technology without feeling like you've fallen into a rabbit hole? Well, look no further than the iPad – the sleek, shiny, and surprisingly simple device that promises to revolutionize your tech experience without making you feel like you need a degree in rocket science to operate it.

The iPad is basically a magic slate that responds to your touch with all the enthusiasm (and none of the mess!) of a loyal puppy. Want to check your email? Just tap-tap-tap away, and voila! Your inbox magically appears, ready to be read. Feeling nostalgic for the good ol' days of flipping through photo albums? Swipe left, swipe right, and before you know it, you're knee-deep in a virtual treasure trove of memories (tip: get your family to send you photos and save them to your Photos library.) But wait, there's more! The iPad isn't just for checking emails and scrolling through photos – it's also your one-way ticket to the wild world of apps. From games that'll make you feel like a kid again (Candy Crush, anyone?) to brain-teasers that'll keep you sharp as a tack (hello, Sudoku!), there's an app for every mood and occasion. And don't even get me started on FaceTime – the magical feature that lets you video chat with your grandkids as if they were right there in the room with you. Trust me, the look on their faces when you send them a selfie with the dog filter is worth the price of admission alone. Don't forget to invest in a stylus — you can go cheap and plentiful or full on Apple pencil, either only necessary in the case of dexterity concerns. Of course, no review would be complete without addressing the elephant in the room: the dreaded "tech support" hotline. But fear not, dear seniors, for Apple's customer service is the stuff of legends – friendly, patient, and armed with more troubleshooting tips than you can shake a stick at. So go ahead, give that iPad a whirl – because life's too short to let a little thing like technology stand in the way of a good time. Apple also offers in store and online classes to learn about your new device, all for free. In conclusion, if you're a senior looking to dip your toes into the digital waters without feeling like you've been thrown into the deep end, the iPad is your new best friend. (Guys: my mom literally calls her iPad her "best friend.") It's simple, it's intuitive, and most importantly, it's a whole lot of fun. So go ahead, take the plunge – I promise you won't regret it. Happy tapping! 📱💫

GrandPad is a simplified tablet designed for seniors that comes preloaded with essential apps like email, video calling, and photo sharing. With its large icons and text, and 24/7 support, GrandPad makes staying connected with loved ones easier for those who can't get accustomed to the icon-heavy iPad.

Why GrandPad: When an iPad isn't called for, say your grandparent is one of the 39% of seniors over 70 who don't have a smartphone, the GrandPad is like the Swiss Army knife of tech gadgets for seniors. It's got everything Grandma needs and nothing she doesn't. No confusing buttons or complicated menus here – just a simple, senior-friendly interface that even a technologically-challenged cat could figure out.

But what really sets the GrandPad apart from the competition? The built-in "Grandie" smart assistant! Think of it as your own personal IT guy, but it's a cute and wise little owl. Need help setting up email? Grandie has got your back. And if the virtual assistant doesn't cover it, you can call Help 24/7 because of it's included in the GrandPad subscription (more on that in a minute). Either way, it's like having a tech-savvy grandchild in your pocket – minus the eye-rolling and exasperated sighs.

Let's not forget about the Photos feature – the virtual scrapbook that lets Grandma relive her glory days without having to dig through dusty photo albums. From her wedding day to that time she accidentally dyed the cat purple, every memory is just a tap away. Plus, with the built-in camera, Grandma can finally show off her knitting projects to the entire family without having to resort to carrier pigeons.

And that's not all! The GrandPad also comes with a built-in stylus, because see above mentioned stylus for iPad. A stylus just makes sense. And with the option to customize the font size and screen brightness, you can finally read her emails without having to break out the magnifying glass.

Why do I hesitate on the GrandPad? Unlike the iPad, it requires a subscription (btwn. $65-95 monthly as of March 2024) just to access the tablet, cellular data, software and 24/7 customer care. That's a minimum of $780 a year for a device that's not necessarily intuitive to the on-the-ground support (or me, Helpnology). The iPad only costs a one-time fee plus a wi-fi subscription. So, if you think the GrandPad is worth your loved one having 24/7 support (and I've heard they're GOOD), by all means....
