How to Silence Your iPhone

(and spare yourself needless embarrassment)

Don’t you just feel for the poor soul fumbling to shush a ringing or vibrating phone during a meeting or movie? I’ve been them—in front of 100 of my colleagues when my best friend’s special ringtone, “Run the World (Girls)” by Beyoncé starts with “we run this mutha” mid-presentation. Never again.

Lucky for us, Apple iPhones offer Do Not Disturb, a feature that silences annoying chimes, dings, and rings whenever you want. iPhones with Do Not Disturb on will not:

  • Make sounds

  • Light up its screen

  • Generally interrupt you

  • Skip alarms (they will still sound)

Customizing Do Not Disturb takes a few moves to set up the effectively, but it’s just one step thereafter. The sweet silence is worth the effort.

Follow these 5 steps.

STEP 1

Tap Settings, the gear wheel, on your iPhone screen.

If you don’t see it: glide (aka swipe) your finger left to right across the screen to reveal a Google-like search box, tap “Search”, then type “Settings”, tap and open.

TIP: Settings is a gear wheel for most apps and devices because it controls setup.

STEP 2

Scroll until you see Focus.

The tool's symbol is a crescent moon, recalling a dark, cozy night. 😴

STEP 3

Tap Focus, and you’ll see a screen with a list:

  • Do Not Disturb

  • Driving

  • Personal

  • Sleep

  • Work

I’m going to focus on Do Not Disturb (DnD). Tap Do Not Disturb. Then scroll and tap Add Schedule and set the time for your Do Not Disturb.

You can actually schedule daily quiet time—I like 9pm - 7am. Tap Scheduled to toggle the option on (green) or off and tap times to set your preference.

Now you're free from 4am texts from other time zones!

Scroll down and tap the Repeated Calls. This lets anyone who calls you twice within three minutes get through. My husband often calls 2x to interrupt, er, connect.

Play with the Allow Calls From setting, which allow certain someones to always get through. Like said husband. Feel free to play around with the others settings.

STEP 4

You did it! When Do Not Disturb is On, you'll know by way of the tiny moon at the top of your iPhone screen, in the status bar.

STEP 5

I saved the BEST for last! You can temporarily Do Not Disturb for museums or movies.

  1. Open your Control Center by dragging your finger from the top right of the screen.

  2. Tap Focus

  3. Tap the three dots next to Do Not Disturb

  4. Select the duration or location by tapping it.

  5. Enjoy the silence!

  6. When time's up or you leave the location, Do Not Disturb will automatically turn off and regular sounds and Notifications reappear without you having to remember.
